“You should have seen this one at Pilates this morning!” Parker gestures toward Brantley, who sits nestled comfortably against my side on Flash and Arden’s patio sectional sofa.

Brantley makes a “shoo” motion with one hand, but when I glance down at her I can tell from her expression that she’s proud of the compliment.

“She’s been practicing for a couple of months and she’s already become one of the strongest people in our class.” Parker continues, her voice full of admiration. “She’s like Wonder Woman.”

Arden takes a sip of her wine, grinning. “That’s my bestie. Always being the best at what she puts her mind to.”

Brantley shakes her head, and the fragrance of her honey-lemon shampoo, a scent I’ve grown to love, wafts in front of my nose. “Nah. Your memory is too short, Ards. Remember when you tried to get me to take up running with you? I was terrible at it.”

Arden giggles. “That’s only because your little legs were too short to keep up with mine.”

Brantley holds out one shapely, jeans-clad leg. “Short maybe. Not tiny.”

Arden rolls her eyes. “Whatever.”

Flash jumps in. He’s sitting at the other end of the sectional, at Arden’s side. One of his hands rests on Nitro’s head. “You can always jump in on training with us. We’re running a half-marathon in February.”

Brantley’s nose wrinkles. “First of all, ain’t nobody running thirteen miles all at once. And secondly, I don’t do cold. February is cold.”

Parker speaks up enthusiastically. “I’ve always wanted to try running!”

Brantley gives her a warm gaze, her tone teasing. “Of course you have.”

From his place on the wicker rocking chair nearby, Alonzo joins the conversation. “I’m always up for a challenge. When and where is this training taking place?”

Brantley slides her fingers up my arm, looking up at me with big, melted-chocolate eyes. “Does this mean I’m losing you to the running club, too?”

Shaking my head, I drop a kiss on her forehead. “Nah. I’m good with the treadmill at the gym and boxing. I don’t feel any need to run in a race. Especially if you’re not by my side.”

Her eyes soften and she tilts her face toward mine, and I softly take her lips. A zing of electricity moves through me at the touch. Every single time I’m this close to Brantley, which is m ore often than not these days, my body reacts. It’s like the more time I spend with her, the more attuned to her I become. We haven’t slept together yet, and I can’t remember the last time I’ve waited this long when I’ve been seeing someone exclusively. But then, I’ve never felt about anyone the way I feel about Brantley Hughes.

As much as I want her, the desire to not fuck it up is even stronger.

All the reasons to wait have been ringing in my heart the entire time I’ve been with her. The fact that she’s my sister-in-law’s best friend. My brother’s warning about not hurting her from the very beginning. She’s a mom, too, and that’s sacred to me.
